Temporomandibular Joints are one of the most important parts of your face. Although you might not think about them very often, these parts enable you to talk, chew, and many more things. Your jawbones are connected to the skull by these, and they spring into action at the time of chewing, swallowing, and talking.
Injuries in the jaw joints and the jaw muscles are the reasons for the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder, and it often occurs when there is inflammation such as overuse. There are many ways to detect TMJ which are used by a dentist. While consultation, the dentist will examine the area of the jaw by pressing on it to locate the site of the pain. In some cases, you will be recommended to take a dental x-ray, CT scans, and MRIs. TMJ arthroscopy can also be used for the diagnosis.
In some cases, TMJ disorder might go away without any treatment. But if you still feel the pain, then your dentist may recommend some of the below-mentioned therapies:
Many people have the habit of biting the teeth, leaning on the chin, and clenching the teeth. These are the primary reasons for accelerating the TMJ disorder; hence they should be avoided. But unfortunately, not everyone is aware of the outcomes of these bad habits. So, dentists counsel and educate them regarding the primary causes of the pain so that it can be avoided.
Physical Therapy
Exercises that help in stretching and strengthening the jaw muscles can be very beneficial as they are the best treatment for the TMJ disorder. Along with that, some other treatments like moist heat, ice, and ultrasound can also be used.
Mouth Guards
When people encounter a lot of pain in their jaw, they are advised to wear a soft or firm device called a mouthguard over their teeth to help reduce the pain.
Apart from the above-mentioned therapies, there are surgical procedures and other medications as well, which will be considered for the treatment.
